Chapter 14: Probability

Experimental Probability

Formula

P(E) = Number of trials where E occurs / Total number of trials

Properties

  • 0 ≤ P(E) ≤ 1
  • P(sure event) = 1
  • P(impossible event) = 0
  • P(E) + P(not E) = 1

Example

A coin is tossed 100 times. Head appears 56 times.

P(Head) = 56/100 = 0.56 P(Tail) = 44/100 = 0.44

Practice Problems

  1. Die rolled 60 times. 6 appears 12 times. P(6) = 12/60 = 1/5 = 0.2

  2. Bag has 3 red, 2 blue balls. One drawn randomly. P(Red) = 3/5 = 0.6 P(Blue) = 2/5 = 0.4
