Chapter 4: Linear Equations in Two Variables

Solutions of Linear Equations

What is a Solution?

A solution is a pair (x,y)(x, y) that satisfies the equation.

Example: 2x+3y=122x + 3y = 12

Check if (3,2)(3, 2) is a solution: 2(3)+3(2)=6+6=122(3) + 3(2) = 6 + 6 = 12

Finding Solutions

For 2x+3y=122x + 3y = 12:

xySolution
04(0,4)(0, 4)
32(3,2)(3, 2)
60(6,0)(6, 0)

A linear equation has infinitely many solutions!
