Chapter 3: Coordinate Geometry

Exercise 3.1 & 3.2 - Solutions

Exercise 3.1 & 3.2 - Detailed Solutions

Exercise 3.1

Question 1: Describe the position of a table lamp

Solution:

Step 1: Choose two perpendicular edges of your table as axes

  • One edge = x-axis
  • Adjacent edge = y-axis
  • Corner where they meet = origin

Step 2: Measure distances

  • Distance from y-axis = x-coordinate
  • Distance from x-axis = y-coordinate

Example: If lamp is 25 cm from one edge and 30 cm from adjacent edge: Position = (25,30)(25, 30)

Exercise 3.2

Question 1: Name the following

(i) Horizontal and vertical lines to determine position?

Answer: x-axis and y-axis (coordinate axes)

(ii) Name of each part of the plane?

Answer: Quadrant

(iii) Point where these lines intersect?

Answer: Origin (denoted O)

Question 2: From the figure, find:

(i) Coordinates of B

Looking at point B:

  • x-distance from y-axis = -5
  • y-distance from x-axis = 2

Answer: (5,2)(-5, 2)

(ii) Coordinates of C

Answer: (5,5)(5, -5)

(iii) Which point has coordinates (3,5)(-3, -5)?

Answer: Point E

(vi) Ordinate of point H

Ordinate means y-coordinate.

Answer: 3-3
